Rules & Tactics Seminar - March 29th 2012
On Thursday March 29, Dave Cramb of Race-Ready will putting on a seminar at DCYC. The focus of the presentation will be Rules & Tactics, with a focus on starts. The seminar is free of charge as VARC is covering the cost...very special thanks to VARC/BMW. I expect this will be a great evening, as we all continue to grow/refine our tactics and our understanding of the rules. The timing of this seminar is strategic - thanks to Rob Smith's suggestion - as we will already have 5 races under our belt, so there should be many real live examples to discuss. I should have my new on-board camera on board for the first race, so we should have some live footage to review as well. So you Dolphinettes are forewarned, take the extra time to look pretty as you will likely be on camera!!!

This seminar is open to all Captains/Crews, DCYC Sailors, DCYC Members and Friends...please pass the word. Please remember to sign in all non-members, and please have dinner/drinks at the club...we need to support 'Food and Bar.'

Racing at DCYC

When you enter the Deep Cove Yacht Club clubhouse you notice that the display cases are filled with trophies. These trophies represent the long tradition of sailboat racing at DCYC. Over the years, our club has produced many top notch sailors. Even though some of the faces have changed, the rich racing/sailing tradition at DCYC continues on to this day. "Any Sunday" you will see the docks spilling over with crews getting the boats ready to race. You'll find keelboat racing series, dingy sailing for juniors , and major events such as the VARC Martin Marine Deep Cove Regatta that DCYC will be hosting again this year in September. We have events to attract the serious sailboat racers and for the more casual sailors we have the Deep Cove Rally which will be held in June. Most of our club racers are always looking for crew, which makes this an activity for all members to enjoy. So if you are looking to join in the fun, come on down to the docks...we promise no one will be left behind!

Sailboat racing truly encompasses the great heritage and community spirit of DCYC. We welcome participation from the community and other clubs such as the Centennial Sailing Club. Members and non-members have made our racing program a huge success. To find out more about our sailboat racing program, please feel free to contact Fleet Captain Marc Munro at (604) 561 5936 or check out the notices in the racing section of the bulletin board downstairs at the clubhouse.

This years racing schedule promises to deliver another action-packed season...we hope to see you down on the docks.

Fleet Captain – Robert Smith

We’ll have to let the results speak for themselves. This was one of the tightest Div A championships ever. With perennial BOTY challenger Imagine, winning a close championship over High Strung and Crystal Dolphin. After the Winter and Spring Series Crystal Dolphin took a narrow 1 point lead over Imagine into the summer, High Strung sat in third 5 points back but riding high off a Spring Series victory. It would all come down to the Fall Series. As happens, the weather shortened the schedule to only 4 races. Imagine winning the 3 they competed in to squeeze out a 1 point overall Division Championship! Crystal Dolphin finished second and High Strung faded to a distance third, and on to an early retirement. Farewell thee C&C 27, you will be missed.

While we bid farewell to one, we say hello to a new Choat 27, Rodger Welch’s new campaign named “Straight Shot” and she would replace the Div A Kirby 25, Flaming Redhead. The Flaming Redhead name was transferred to the Choat and Rodger was transferred to Div 1 with another sleek, potentially fast, red machine! The thunder in Div 1 belonged to Aquila, Rob Sloss and his international crew almost ran the table, winning 8 out of 9 races in the Winter/Spring sessions and coasted to victory tied to the dock for the fall series. “You’re always first to the bar when you don’t leave the dock!” Hot Spur, Powomis and My Mister we’re the other notables in Div 1.

We introduced First in Division race mugs to the Fleet a tradition that continues to this day. That includes a free beer to the winning skippers. Or in Brian’s case a Chardonnay! As always, the Fleet gathers in the clubhouse after each race to toast the day, the results and warm up with a plate of nachos! Another tradition that makes Deep Cove racing our favourite time of year!
